The Hickman County community is grieving the sudden loss of Darrell Sims, a cherished local figure and longtime advocate for the Fayette County Transit Authority (FCTA), who passed away Thursday following a brief illness. Sims’ death came just two days after his 65th birthday, leaving family, friends, and the broader community reeling from the unexpected loss of a man whose life was defined by service, kindness, and unwavering dedication.

Darrell Sims was more than a familiar face in the community—he embodied the spirit of connection and commitment. He became involved with FCTA shortly after its founding in the mid-1980s, initially as a client relying on daily transportation to his job in Mayfield. Over time, his dedication and enthusiasm earned him the honorary title of FCTA Ambassador, a role he embraced with pride, representing the organization at parades, festivals, and public events for decades.
Kristin Grooms, Deputy Director of FCTA, described Sims as “a bright light whose presence was felt every single day.” She recalled his regular weekday rides, the holiday cards he faithfully sent, and the thoughtful phone calls he made to staff. “Darrell wasn’t just someone who rode the bus,” Grooms said. “He was part of the heart of FCTA.”
Sims’ warm smile and infectious enthusiasm were legendary at events like the Twin Cities Banana Festival Parade and local Christmas celebrations. Friends note that he often spent more time engaging with attendees than tossing candy, a reflection of his genuine love for people and connection. His compassion extended beyond FCTA, touching the lives of friends, neighbors, and colleagues alike.
Outside of his community work, Sims was a devoted fan of Kentucky basketball, a lover of music, and a man of deep faith. His spirituality guided his actions, and he often prayed for the success of FCTA and the well-being of those around him. Fulton Tourism Director Kenney Etherton reflected on his friendship with Darrell, noting, “While he will be deeply missed on Earth, his faith offers comfort. Darrell is living on in Heaven with the Lord, and his life continues to inspire all of us.”
Darrell Sims’ passing leaves a lasting void, but his legacy endures in the countless lives he touched, the friendships he nurtured, and the joy he brought to everyday moments. He will be remembered not only as an ambassador for FCTA but as a shining example of service, faith, and the profound impact one person can have through kindness and connection.
