With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we pause to remember and honor the life of Jeffery Scott, a 54-year-old man whose life was tragically taken on the evening of February 4, 2026, in Troup County. His passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him, as a single act of violence forever altered the lives of many.
According to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:49 p.m. to a residence located at 209 Big Springs Mountville Road after reports that two adult men had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately began life-saving measures until Fire Department and EMS personnel arrived and assumed medical care.
Tragically, Jeffery Scott succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His death came far too soon, leaving behind a depth of grief that words cannot fully express. Jeffery was far more than the circumstances of that night—he was a son, a friend, and a man with a life story, shared memories, and people who loved him deeply. His absence will be felt every day by those who laughed with him, leaned on him, and shared in life’s moments both big and small.
The second victim, Walter Keene, 50, was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, where he received treatment for his injuries. As he continues on his path to recovery, thoughts and prayers remain with him—not only for physical healing, but for the emotional toll of surviving such a traumatic and life-altering event.
Investigators later determined that the suspect, Zachary Thompkins, 32, came to the residence to confront one of the victims over a prior disagreement. During the confrontation, a firearm was produced, and both men were shot before the suspect fled the scene. Thompkins was later located on Greenville Road and taken into custody without incident. He now faces charges including Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.
