The New Jersey State Police are mourning the loss of Sgt. First Class Sean William Acker, a dedicated and respected trooper whose life was tragically cut short Wednesday due to complications from a duty-related injury. Acker’s passing leaves a profound void within the State Police community, among family, friends, and all who knew him.
A native of Howell, New Jersey, Acker served with distinction for more than 19 years, most recently assigned to the Division Staff Section. Acting Superintendent Lt. Col. David Sierotowicz noted that Acker’s death followed years of serious medical challenges stemming from injuries sustained in the line of duty, reflecting the physical toll of a life committed to service.
Before joining the State Police, Acker proudly served in the United States Air Force. Enlisting in 1998, he attained the rank of staff sergeant and was a member of the Air Force’s elite “Ravens” unit, where he carried out high-risk assignments with precision and dedication. In 2006, he joined the 145th State Police Class, bringing the same level of discipline, skill, and leadership to his law enforcement career.
Within the State Police, Acker became widely respected for his role at the State Police Academy, where he served as head instructor of the Physical Training Unit. Colleagues described him as a demanding yet inspirational mentor who pushed recruits to surpass their perceived limits, often running alongside them to demonstrate resilience and commitment firsthand. His leadership left a lasting impact on generations of troopers.
The years of rigorous physical training eventually caused significant damage to Acker’s hips, leading to a double hip replacement. As he prepared to return to active duty, he suffered further complications. According to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a blood clot led to a pulmonary embolism and cardiac arrest, resulting in a traumatic brain injury and a prolonged, complex recovery. During this time, he became a recipient of the Tunnel to Towers Smart Home Program, which provided specialized support to accommodate his medical needs.
Sgt. Acker is survived by his wife, retired State Police Capt. Lisa Acker, and their two children, Connor and Samantha. His dedication, courage, and unwavering service exemplified the highest ideals of law enforcement.
